3.1.3.2 Session: Exploration of peer-to-peer communication

(90min)

Experiment scenario 1 (30 min)

Ideate phase

  • Organize students into groups so each group operates one type of machine
  • Students should define organization protocol (will be orders or resource-based)
  • Students should ideate on solutions to problems from the defined phase
  • Each group must provide a sequence diagram (SC) defining the communication flow between peers in the network
  • Each group must produce a flowchart (FC) of the client algorithm to handle its operations.

Examples of SC AGV and assembly machine

Prototype

  • Students run the scenario and play their assigned roles in the experiment
    • Each role played by a student or group of students demands that they manually simulate the behavior of the assigned entity
    • Press Machine
      • before starting 10 bolts represented by 10 paper tickets should be available
      • it waits for incoming messages
      • it must follow the production constraints 2 minutes for one product
    • Lathe machine
      • before starting 10 nuts represented by 10 paper tickets should be available
      • it waits for the incoming messages
      • it must follow the production constraints 1 minute for one product
    • Assembly machine
      • it waits for the incoming messages
      • it must follow the production constraints of 30 seconds for one assembly
      • at the end of the process, the bolt and nut ticket should be stamped together which represents the finished product
    • AGV
      • it waits for the incoming messages from other entities
      • it must follow the movement constraints for each route
  • Students conclude the experiment when all 10 products are assembled
  • They should write the findings, especially regarding troubles and potential bottlenecks

Experiment scenario 2 (60 min)

Ideate phase

  • Organize students so there are more production units of the same type

Prototype

  • Students run the scenario and play their assigned role in the experiment
  • Adjust the amount of initial resources to the time constraints of this course module
  • Students conclude the experiment with a report on their findings
