Here is the list of our invited “Girls in ICT” who generously shared their experience in previous editions of Girls in ICT Day.
2024

Antía Fernández López. Antía is a Telecommunications Engineer, with a Master’s in Telematic Engineering, both from the University of Vigo, and an MBA from UIE. Since 2008, she has worked on R&D projects for various sectors at GRADIANT (Galician Telecommunications Technology Center). Her career spans from ideation, execution, and project management, to the direction of a technological area and business development. She has experience in data-related technologies, with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, connectivity, and cybersecurity. Additionally, she works for the European Commission as an evaluator and reviewer of projects and is a professor of technologies applied to business in different business schools and university master’s programs.

Lorena Fernández Fernández. Lorena studied Mathematics at USC and completed her studies with a Master’s in Industrial Mathematics from UVigo. She worked at the Integrated Engineering Group of UDC and then at the National Renewable Energy Center (in Pamplona) on research projects aimed at solving problems of academic and industrial interest in the field of fluid dynamics using high-performance computing systems. She currently works at CESGA as a senior research technician in the line of applying Artificial Intelligence to industrial production.

Olalla Rama García. Olalla is a graduate in Computer Engineering from the University of A Coruña, with a Master’s in Cybersecurity. Her professional career began linked to the field of cybersecurity, specifically in cybersecurity auditing (“pentesting”), although she currently performs functions related to vulnerability analysis and management in an Amtega project aimed at improving the cybersecurity of local entities in Galicia. In addition, she actively participates in CTF (Capture The Flag) competitions in which knowledge and skills as a hacker are tested.

Noemi Basanta Cheda, She holds a degree in architecture from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of A Coruña, with a specialization in Urban Planning. After working in various architecture and set design studios, she joined Galopín Playgrounds, becoming a key part of the Projects Department, where she develops proposals for children’s play spaces around the world. She has fifteen years of experience in this complex activity of intervening in public space for such a sensitive user as children, with direct influence on society.

2023

Mariamo Mussa Juane says that she studied physics because she was inquisitive and earned a doctorate in complex systems physics because she was curious. Both obsessions linked her to Santiago de Compostela. The word complexity means the quality of being entirely entangled. An ant, a poppy, an earthquake, a cloud, or even a computer, all of them are complex systems. Currently, she works at CESGA. She coordinates a quantum computing group, a new paradigm of computing based on quantum mechanics. She is dedicated to creating quantum algorithms that demand new ways of looking. What does the physics of complex systems have to do with quantum computing?

Esther Medina She is the Head of Innovation in the Digital Environment at Corporación RTVG. She studied Telecommunications Engineering, completed a Master’s in Information and Communication Technologies focused on the Internet at USC. She also holds an MBA and a Doctorate from U. Vigo in the Doctoral Program in Economic Analysis and Business Strategy.

Alba Meijide, Born in A Coruña, she holds a degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Manchester, where she later completed her studies with a Master of Engineering in AI. 1 Her professional activity began with the coordination and management of the international congress “Digital Worlds,” and she develops her professional activity as a consultant and designer of Artificial Intelligence-based projects for both national and international companies in a wide variety of sectors. These projects were recently combined with the position of Curator of the “AI: More than Human” exhibition in A Coruña, an unprecedented exhibition of the creative and scientific developments of Artificial Intelligence, where she was also responsible for the design of the only national development included in the exhibition

Carmela Troncoso She is a Galician telecommunications engineer who, after studying at the University of Vigo, earned her doctorate in Telecommunications Engineering at KU Leuven University in Belgium. She is currently a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, and she directs the SPRING Laboratory, specializing in privacy and security, at the same university. She has received multiple awards and recognitions throughout her career, such as the EPFL Best Computer Science Teacher award (2022), and Fortune Magazine included her in 2020 in the prestigious group of 40 emerging leaders for her leading role in building the decentralized privacy-preserving proximity tracing system or DP-3T, which was a tracing application that served to curb the spread of the disease in Switzerland.

ANO 2022

Laura Martínez Calvo holds a degree in Pharmacy from USC, a Master’s in Biomedical Research, and a Doctorate in Molecular Medicine with a thesis on geostatistical techniques in the study of complex diseases, in collaboration with Harvard Medical School (Boston). A researcher at the Foundation for Health Research Institute of Santiago de Compostela (FIDIS) in the field of genetics in cancer and rare diseases, she joined the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA) as a Senior Project Technician for the ‘EuroCC: National Competence Centers in the Framework of EuroHPC’ initiative.

Edita de Lorenzo: Tenured Professor in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at UVigo. She was the first director of an engineering school in Galicia, the Telecommunications School of Uvigo. She is also Vice-Dean of the College of Telecommunications Engineers of Galicia (COETG) and Vice-President of the Association of Telecommunications Engineers of Galicia (AETG), Secretary of the Board of Directors of the PuntoGal Association, participates in the Women and Science Unit of Galicia, and in the Wise Women Committee of the Feminisms 4.0 Chair of Uvigo. She is also a co-founder of the Spanish section of WIE (Women in Engineering), which is part of the IEEE.

Dhaunae de Vir: She is originally from Ancares, but currently resides in Brussels working as a business developer for transmedia projects for a video game company. She is an esports specialist and holds a Master’s in Esports Management and Marketing from the European University of Lisbon. She is a certified futures designer by the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto. She is certified in Artificial Intelligence by the University of Oxford and in Digital Transformation by MIT. In addition to being an ambassador for the WomenTech Network and Women in Games associations, she is preparing her Artificial Intelligence thesis for the Master’s in Technology Management at the Open University.

Lucía Ardao Rodríguez holds a degree in Computer Science and a Master’s in Telematics from the University of A Coruña, an AMP Senior Management program from IE Business School, and an Executive program from the Xunta de Galicia. Her professional career is linked to companies in the Information Technology and Telecommunications sector, from spin-offs to software companies and consultancies, holding various Regional and Corporate Management, Business Unit, and Operations positions. She is currently the Director of Galicia and the Director of Global Market Operations for Industry and Consumer at Minsait (Indra). She has been awarded by the Official College of Computer Engineering of Galicia (CPEIG) for her professional career.

Ana Freire
She is an engineer and holds a doctorate in computer science from UDC. Currently, she is a researcher and professor at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona), where she works applying Artificial Intelligence to various social needs such as mental health.
She is the director of the UPF Center for Sustainability Studies and leads Wisibilízalas, an international competition to break down gender stereotypes associated with scientific-technological studies. She has received numerous recognitions for the social impact of her research, including the Young Female Researcher Talent Award, granted by the Royal Academy of Sciences Foundation, and the Ada Byron Award, granted by the University of Deusto.

Úrsula Martínez Álvarez. Graduate in Aerospace Engineering, finishing the Master’s in Aeronautical Engineering, specialized in space vehicles. Her work focuses on projects related to the design, manufacture, and testing of systems and experiments in space. For 11 years, she has been part of the Climántica environmental education project.

Verónica Bolón Canedo. Doctorate in Computer Science from UDC. Researcher focused on Artificial Intelligence, especially Machine Learning for Big Data. Head of the INSPIRA STEAM node in A Coruña.

2020

Amparo Alonso Betanzos is a professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Computer Science of UDC and president of AEPIA (Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence). She directs the LIDIA group (R&D Laboratory in Artificial Intelligence), which has received awards for its work in applied Artificial Intelligence.

Isabel Expósito Pérez is a Telecommunications Engineer from the University of Vigo, specializing in radio communications. She works as a technician at the Antelia laboratory, which belongs to the Radio Systems research group, recognized as a Competitive Reference Group by the Xunta de Galicia. The Radio Systems group is one of the groups that make up the AtlantTIC center. The AtlantTIC Center is an internationally recognized research center in Telecommunications at the University of Vigo.

María Fernández Hermida She is a Galician digital artist in the video game industry. She has worked at Estudio Gato Salvaje creating 3D environments and scripts for games. For the past 3 years, she has been a “Women in Games Ambassador,” an organization that promotes video games as a career for women, organizing talks and panels and supporting women in the industry.

Patricia Mañana Borrazás She is an archaeologist, project coordinator at DIMENSO, and professor of courses on Digital Technologies for Geometric Documentation and Heritage Representation at CSIC. She has more than 20 years of experience in archaeological excavations, in which she has been applying New Technologies applied to heritage documentation for 10 years, such as photogrammetry and scanners of multiple types, 3D, Total Stations, GPS, Structured Light Scanner, short-range and terrestrial lasers, etc.
2019

Pilar Vila Avendaño. Computer engineer, forensic analyst, and computer judicial expert. She is the CEO of the company forensic-security.com, a cybersecurity expert, and a member of the board of directors of the Official College of Computer Engineering of Galicia (CPEIG).

Sonia Valladares Rodríguez. Telecommunications engineer, biotechnology researcher, especially in the application of Machine Learning, ICTs, and gamification techniques in the early detection of cognitive decline.

Mercedes García Rodríguez. Translator, software developer, GalsTech co-organizer. R&D Manager at 1Millionbot, a conversational chatbot development company. https://1millionbot.com/ She is one of the three Google Developer Experts in Galicia and the first woman.

Berta Caro: Holds a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid. Director of Corporate Development and Corporate Social Responsibility at Tecalis, an ICT company located in Ames. There, she fosters a socially responsible, collaborative corporate culture, where people are the core that sustains the company’s growth. In this position, she has received various awards and recognitions.

2018

María José Durán is a computer engineer and founder of the online store Potingues Verdes (http://potinguesverdes.com/).

Cecilia Grela is a computer engineer, holds a Master’s in Opensource Software Consulting, and is a software developer in R&D&I projects (including ICT-Go-Girls!) and a trainer in ICT.

Susana Rey is a telecommunications engineer, holds a Master’s in Information Security. She is the Data Protection Officer of the Euskaltel Group (Euskaltel, Telecable, R).

2017

Carmen Cotelo Queijo. Holds a degree in Physics from the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has worked since 1999 at the Galicia Supercomputing Center, where she is a senior computer analyst and coordinates CESGA’s participation in the European Fortissimo 2 project. She has extensive experience in R&D projects in various fields such as e-commerce, high-performance and grid computing, scientific applications, and support for companies to incorporate HPC into their processes.
Nieves R. Brisaboa. PhD in Computing and Psychology. Professor in the area of Computer Languages and Systems, she created the Database Laboratory (LBD) in 1996, declared a research group of excellence by the Xunta de Galicia. She was manager of the National Research Plan in Computer Science between 2010 and 2014. In 2016, she received the Ada Byron award from the College of Computer Engineering, for the promotion of Computer Science among women. She promotes both excellence in research and technology transfer.
Alba Alonso, PhD in English Philology and teacher, entrepreneur and founder of the company RealKiddys.com, a platform that promotes an educational project of gender equality and co-education without stereotypes, developing material and activities to work in this field. Among other initiatives, speaker at TEDxGalicia 2015.
María Jesús Taboada, PhD in Physical Sciences from USC. Researcher in artificial intelligence and its applications in medicine from the Department of Electronics and Computation at USC. She directs the KEAM (Knowledge Engineering Applied to Medicine) research group, an international reference in its field.
